MKZip for SharePoint - Features

MKZip for SharePoint provides native XML and picture file optimization, PDF conversion and Zip compression features enabling to drastically reduce the size of the files uploaded to the SharePoint servers.

XML and picture file optimization, PDF conversion and Zip compression of the files uploaded by the SharePoint users occurs at the time of the upload, in real time.

The optimized / converted or compressed files are then stored in the SharePoint libraries.

 

 

 

XML File (DOCX, PPTX, XLSX) Native Optimization


MKZip for SharePoint provides configurable, automatic and transparent native XML optimization for all Microsoft Office 2007 - 2010 - 2013 DOCX, PPTX and XLSX files uploaded to the SharePoint server.

The MKZip for SharePoint XML file volume reduction features apply natively to the DOCX, PPTX and XLSX files (the resulting files remain as native DOCX, PPTX and XLSX files, but made significantly smaller by MKZip for SharePoint).

Since the optimized XML files remain as XML files (for instance an optimized PPTX file remains as a PPTX file), the MKZip for SharePoint XML optimization feature achieves the maximum possible level of transparency in terms of volume reduction for Microsoft Office XML files.
There is simply no need for any particular software or add-ons other than Microsoft Office to open them.

The average volume reduction obtained on a set of several hundred Microsoft Office XML files of all types randomly downloaded from various web sites was over 50%.

The XML optimization feature can be activated on a per SharePoint site or on a per SharePoint library basis and, if needed, for some file types only.

Picture File (JPG, GIF, PNG, EMF, BMP) Native Optimization


MKZip for SharePoint provides configurable, automatic and transparent native volume optimization for all picture files (JPG, GIF, PNG, EMF, BMP) uploaded to the SharePoint server.

The MKZip for SharePoint image file volume reduction features applies natively to the JPG, GIF, PNG, EMF and BMP files (the resulting files remain image files, but made significantly smaller by MKZip for SharePoint).

Since the optimized picture files remain as picture files (an optimized JPG file remains as a JPG file) the MKZip for SharePoint picture optimization feature achieves the maximum possible level of transparency in terms of volume reduction for picture files.
There is simply no need for any particular software or add-ons other than the usual picture file viewers to open them.

The average volume reduction obtained on a set of several hundred image files of all types collected from various sources was over 75%.

The picture file optimization feature can be activated on a per SharePoint site or on a per SharePoint library basis and, if needed, for some file types only.

PDF Conversion


Contrary to Microsoft Office files, PDF files are not easily modifiable (this simply because most of the users have no application enabling to modify PDF files installed on their computers).

MKZip for SharePoint, by offering the option to convert, uploaded MS-Office files (as well as other PDF convertible files like log files, text files etc...) to PDF files greatly helps in achieving a better handling of uploaded SharePoint files that do not have to be modified by the users.

The PDF conversion feature can be activated on a per SharePoint site or on a per SharePoint library basis and, if needed, for some file types only.

The content of the PDF files produced by MKZip for SharePoint is compressed internally (the compression of the internal content of the PDF files is fully transparent to the users).
This makes a PDF file resulting from the conversion of, for instance, a DOCX file, generally smaller than the original DOCX file (and significantly smaller in cases where the original DOCX file includes pictures, company logos or screen shots).
This is a positive side effect attached to the MKZip for SharePoint PDF conversion feature.

Zip Compression


MKZip for SharePoint provides configurable, automatic and transparent Zip compression for files uploaded to the SharePoint server.

Zip compression delivers huge volume reduction on many file types, up to 90% or even more on certain file types.

The Zip compression feature can be activated on a per SharePoint site or on a per SharePoint library basis and, if needed, for some file types only.

Zip files can be opened by all versions of Windows released since Windows XP included. They are displayed as folders by the native Windows Zip Folders utility.

MKZip for SharePoint Configuration


MKZip for SharePoint includes numerous parameters.

MKZip for SharePoint comes with an administration application provided under the form of a SharePoint web site. This web site enables the MKZip administrators to fully manage the MKZip parameters and behavior through a web browser.

XML optimization, image optimization, PDF conversion and Zip compression can be activated only for some sites or libraries and only for given file types.

Additional parameters enable to configure each feature.

Multiple profiles, each containing a specific parameter set, can be defined and applied to given SharePoint sites or libraries.

Updated parameters are refreshed dynamically when saved while MKZip for SharePoint is running.

MKZip for SharePoint Log Files


MKZip for SharePoint can be configured to produce detailed log files enabling to measure the delivered savings on a per file basis. Log files are produced in CSV format and can be opened using Microsoft Excel.

Cumulated numbers are also provided through a monitor measuring and displaying the cumulated savings in real time.

Flexible Technical Architecture


MKZip for SharePoint is modular.
The MKZip for SharePoint optimization / PDF conversion / compression engine can be installed on another computer than the SharePoint server if needed.
